Using the Advanced Search Options, enabled by clicking "Show more search options" under the search bar, can be difficult until you know what each option does. Here's some tips on how to use these extra filters and options.

You can search either the SCPL Catalog or the SCPL Website by changing the Search Type option, found on the right side of the search bar. Try clicking the demo buttons below to what a search using these options looks like.

With 'Catalog' selected, searches will includes results for books, movies, historical documents, etc. This demo's selected options will search for western genre media in our catalog.

With 'Site' selected, searches results will show related pages here on the SCPL Website. Advanced search options cannot be used when searching the website, so those options will be greyed-out and disabled. This demo's selected search options will search the SCPL Website for any content related to or for children.

The Format Filters allow you to narrow down search results to specific media formats. Here is the full list of supported options:

All formats
Audiobook
Book (Physical Books)
Blu-ray
DVD
Digital Collection
Eaudiobook
Ebook
Emagazine
Kit (Book Club Kits)
Large print
Musical Recording
Newspaper
Periodical
Streaming Video
Video Game

The results of the search will only contain items of your chosen media type. Please note that these options are not compatible with the Historical Collection and these filters will not affect the results from the historical database. All results can be filtered on the results page by using the Format tab and buttons on the left side.

The Search Type Filters allow you to narrow down search results to specific titles, authors, series, etc:

The results of the search will only contain items from compatible databases. For example, if you filter by 'General Notes', only Catalog items will be returned by the search. Likewise, when filtering by 'Date', only Historical Collection items will be returned by the search.

*Note: Setting a Historical Collection ID can only be done once, and the search will return results from within that collection.

To demonstrate the differences in results when using a Catalog compatible option and a Historical Collection compatible option, 2 search demos are provided below. The selected filters for the first demo will search for Catalog items with '2000' in the 'General Notes' field. The second demo will search for Historical collection items by 'Date', looking for documents from the year 2000.

Found on the left-side of the search bar, these options allow you to combine multiple search terms. Try clicking the demo buttons below to what a search using those options looks like.

The 'And' option will show results that relate to both search terms. The selected filters and keywords will search for books written by Dav Pilkey with the title 'Dogman'.

The 'Or' option will show results for either search term. The selected filters and keywords will search for books with either 'Dogman' or 'Captain Underpants' in the title.

The 'Not' option will show results without the search term. The selected filters and keywords will search for books written by Dav Pilkey, except for those with 'Dogman' in the title.

Please note that any search terms using 'Not' will be ignored by the Historical Collection. The rest of the search will apply as normal.

Using all options together can be tricky, so here's an example of all 3 options being used at once. The selected filters and keywords will search for any form of media relating to ghosts, or to media with both vampires and werewolves, but filter out anything with zombies in it.
